How Often Should You Meet With Your Accountant?

There are a lot of things that go into running a business, especially a small one. Making sure that you do your finances properly is a very important one. That's why 71% of small businesses outsource this work to certified public accounts, according to GoRemotely. This leads to the question: how often should you meet with your accountant?

Meet at Least Four Times a Year

Businesses, especially small ones, should see certified public accountants at least once a quarter. A better strategy would be to talk with them at least once a month. Technology has made it easy to do things like have video sessions to have brief face-to-face conversations.

Why Meet This Often?

The thinking behind this advice is that just meeting once a year won't let certified public accountants get to know their clients enough. They won't get a clear picture of what kind of transactions their clients do on a regular basis. If they communicate at least four times a year, if not monthly, then they will have a much better chance of gaining a better understanding.

How It Can Help You

The more certified public accountants get a feel for their clients and have regular conversations with them, the more they can possibly anticipate any upcoming issues and take care of them. They can be much more proactive than reactive, which can wind up saving everyone a lot of money in the long run. Accountants can also make recommendations based on what they learn.

They could also wind up giving the businesses they represent more support if there happens to be a crisis of any kind. This includes having budget review sessions, preparing financial forecasts, and listening to any ideas that their clients might have.

These are just a few of the things that certified public accountants can do for their clients, whether they are working with individuals or businesses. Both sides should always have a line of communication open. Either side should contact each other the very second that they have a question. Doing that can prevent a lot of problems in both the present and the future and also keep those businesses from having to pay more than they have to.
